How to hire a full stack developer in Mumbai
Start here
What kind of full stack developer do you need?
A full stack developer works on the screens, the server and the data. Nobody is equally strong at everything, so decide where you need the most strength.
Front end
The pages and screens people use in the browser.
Back end
The server logic, user accounts and business rules.
Data
Storing, reading and changing data in a database.
Deployment
Putting the product online and keeping it running.
Skills
Skills and tools to ask for
Name the tools your product uses today. Use the same words candidates use on their resumes.
A front end framework
For example React, Angular or Vue, with HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
A back end language
For example Node.js, Python, Java or PHP. Ask for the one you use.
Databases
Writing queries and designing simple tables.
APIs
Building and using APIs between the screens and the server.
Also useful, depending on your product:
- Git and working with a team.
- Deployment basics: putting a change online and checking it works.
- Basic security habits, such as protecting logins and user data.
- Fixing bugs in code written by someone else.
- Explaining technical choices in plain words.
The job description
What to put in the job description
A clear description gets you the right people. Keep it short and include these points. More on this in how to write a job description.
- The title and the area the office is in.
- What the product does and who uses it.
- The front end framework and back end language you use.

Check
How to check real full stack work
A resume can list every tool. Real work is easier to see. You do not need to be technical for these checks.
- Ask for live links to products or sites they built. Open them and click around.
- Ask which parts they built themselves, front end, back end or both.
- Ask them to walk you through one past project: the problem, the choices and what they would change.
- Ask how the data was stored and how the screens got it.
- Ask how a change went from their laptop to the live product.
- If they have code on a public page, ask them to explain a small part of it.
A short practical task also works well. For example, a small page that reads items from a sample API, lets the user add one, and saves it. Keep it to an hour or two and agree on it in advance.

Where
Office, hybrid and commute in Mumbai
If you want the developer in the office, commute decides who accepts and who stays. If you offer hybrid work, say it clearly and say which days you need them in.
Search the locality of your office first, then the next stations along the same line, for example Andheri, Goregaon, Malad and Borivali on the western side, or Thane, Mulund and Ghatkopar on the central side. For Navi Mumbai offices, try Vashi, Nerul and Kharghar. See hiring by Mumbai locality.
Search in plain words, for example “full stack developer in Thane with React and Node”. How to use the resume database.
Not sure of the level? Read fresher or experienced, and see the guide for a software engineer.
Avoid these
Common mistakes when hiring a full stack developer
Mistake
Expecting an expert at everything
Few people are strong on every side.
Better
Say which side matters most and ask for working skill in the rest.
Mistake
A long list of technologies
Better
Name the framework and language you actually use.
Mistake
Hiring only on a resume
Better
Ask for live links and a walk-through of one project.
Mistake
Not saying who reviews the code
Better
Say who will check their work, especially for a fresher.
Mistake
Ignoring the commute
Better
Search near the office, or be clear about hybrid days.
FAQ
Common questions
What does a full stack developer actually do?
They work on both sides of a web product: the screens people see (front end) and the server, data and logic behind them (back end). They often also handle simple deployment. Most people are stronger on one side than the other, which is normal.
Should I hire one full stack developer or two specialists?
For a small product or an early team, one full stack developer can cover a lot. As the product grows, specialists on each side usually help. Think about the next year, not just the first month.
Which technologies should I ask for?
Ask for the ones your product already uses, for example one front end framework and one back end language. Candidates who know one stack well can usually learn a similar one, but say so openly in the description.
How do I check a full stack developer without a technical team?
Ask for live links to products they built and a walk-through of one project. Ask which parts they built themselves. A short practical task of an hour or two, agreed in advance, also helps.
